In today’s digital society, one of the most important institutions for spreading knowledge — the public library — is facing an existential crisis, an increasingly illiterate society that is unwilling to search for information beyond their phones. The challenge of working specifically on the brand of NYPL’s Science, Industry and Business Library was to update the library’s image and raise awareness of the services available to New Yorks future business owners. As the library’s standalone location will eventually be merged with the mid-manhattan library, the logo design aims to draw focus to a new digital platform called nypl.works. Based on the geometric hexagon, a symbol for work and collaboration, the logo mark is a graphic in constant motion and becomes modular to reveal the library's divisions of science, industry, and business.
